(1) Population and Ethnicity

According to the fifth census in 2000, Nanjing has a population of 6.238 million people and 1.912 million households. There are 51 ethnic groups in the city with the population of the Han nationality accounting for 98.56% of the total. The people of the city's ethnical minorities number 77,394, of who are 64,823 Hui people, accounting for 83.76% of all minority population, followed by 2311 Man and 533 Zhuang people. The ethnical minority group of Nanjing focuses on Jianye district. In 1999, Nanjing obtained the title of a model city for ethnical solidarity.


(2) Geographic Location

Nanjing, the capital city of Jiangsu Province, is an old and beautiful city. It is located as a plain within the middle lower reaches of the Yangtze River, facing the Ocean in the east, and not far from Anhui Province and Zhejiang Province in the south, near the Hubei Province and Henan Provice in the west and Shandong Province in the north. As a city close to rivers and lakes, Nanjing is proud of its well-situated geographical conditions and abundant natural resources. Also, Nanjing is a well-known ancient cultural city. Since the 3rd century AD, it has been the capitals of 10 dynasties or regimes, i.e., the Eastern Wu, Eastern Jin, Song, Qi, Liang, Chen, Southern Tang, Early Ming, the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and the Republic of China. As one of the "six ancient cities" in China, Nanjing has had been the center of economy, politics and culture of middle lower reaches of Yangtze River in ancient and modern times, and that has been leaving behind effulgent traditional culture. Today, as one of four core cities in the Yangtze Delta, Nanjing is increasingly playing a great role in the economic zone of the national macro productivity layout. Nanjing is a comprehensive industrial base region, an important communication & transportation centers and one of the four scientific research & education centers in East of China. It is also the second largest business center next to Shanghai in the east of China.





(3) Modern Development Profile

The year 2003 witnessed rapid national economic growth in Nanjing which acquired a total GDP of 157.62 billion yuan, an increase of 15.1% as against that of 2002, hence showing the best record in nine years in terms of the increase. The whole city obtained an added industrial value of 65.94 billion yuanúČan increase of 18.4%, while the total retail volume of consumer goods reached 60 billion yuan, an increase of over 14%.

In 2003, with the Yangtze River-Front development as an opportunity and five major industries as emphasis, Nanjing made active efforts in utilizing foreign capital, once again hitting a record high in its open economy. The contract-based foreign capital utilized in Nanjing reached 4.01 billion US dollars, an increase of 84.8%, while foreign capital directly utilized actually reached 2.21 billion US dollarsúČan increase of 47.2%. Newly approved big projects respectively worth 10000000 US dollars amounted to 220 in number, in addition to specially large projects respectively worth over one billion US dollars. The environment for the investment development of four major development parks (High Tech Development Park, Xingang Development Park, Jiangning Development Park and Chemical Development Park) was further optimized. The national chemical base and the national base of high-tech product export were formally approved for establishment, while the processing zone for product export went into operation.


In 2003, urban construction of Nanjing developed rapidly.
